Essence of Zeta Awards

Xi Mu Zeta strives for academic excellence among youth, community empowerment, and the advancement of African-American women. 

Xi Mu Zeta Chapter annually distributes scholarships to deserving young students who are preparing or continuing to pursue a degree of higher learning. Scholarships are awarded in the names of Bonita Woods-Harris, Charlene Drake and Debbie Gayden-Lavizzo. Since the inception of these scholarships in 1991, Xi Mu Zeta has awarded over $18,000.00. The chapter awards scholarships and book awards to deserving students at our annual Essence of Zeta Awards. For scholarship correspondence, please contact Scholarship@XiMuZeta89.org.


Debbie Gayden-Lavizzo Scholarship 

Debbie Gayden-Lavizzo was born in McComb, Mississippi, September 25, 1961. The youngest of six children, she was taught early in life that success comes with hard work and perseverance. Active in her community and church, loyal to her family and friends, Debbie gave of herself for the benefit of others in all that she did.

In 1981, she was initiated into the Sisterhood of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority at Southern Mississippi University. As a dedicated member, she strived for excellence in her chapter. Upon graduation, Debbie relocated to Chicago where she continued her strive for excellence and true dedication as a member of Xi Mu Zeta Chapter.

In 1997, she lost her battle with breast cancer at the young age of 36. Before her transition into Omega Chapter, where she is now a Triumphant Soror, she resided in the South Suburbs. Debbie's spirit lives on through her husband; Christopher, her children,; Michael Alexander and Taylor Marie, her parents, sibling, Sorors and close friends. This award is named on her behalf to inspire students in the South Suburbs to continue to strive for excellence.

To be considered, applicant must:

  • Submit a completed application on/before March 1, 2006;

  • Be active and involved with community service within the South Suburban community;

  • Have a C average;

  • Submit three (3) letters of recommendation; one from an active Zeta, high school counselor, high school teacher, a church official or employer.

  • Submit a copy of your high school transcripts reflecting your cumulative grade point average.


Bonita Woods-Harris Scholarship

Bonita Woods-Harris was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 8, 1967. Affectionately known as "Bunny", she had a great love for children. This love let to her interest in the field of education. She acquired a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Education from Western Illinois University and Chicago State University respectively.

She entered the sisterhood of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. on May 6, 1990, Once becoming a member she wanted to be involved in any and all activities that pertained to children. She soon became sponsor of the Archonette Club. Under her leadership, the club expanded between 70-80 members.

On September 16, 1995, Bonita became a Triumphant Zeta. At the time of her passing she was a 5th grade teacher at Barton Elementary School. She left an indelible impression and legacy of love for those students she taught and those many young ladies who were members of the Archonette Club.

To be considered, applicant must:

  • Be an active and financial member in the Archonette Club for at least six (6) months;

  • Have a C average;

  • Submit three (3) letters of recommendation; one from an active Zeta, high school counselor, high school teacher, a church official or employer.

  • Submit a copy of your high school transcripts reflecting your cumulative grade point average.


Charlene Drake Scholarship

Charlene Drake, a committed member of the sorority for 18 years, demonstrated through her life the principles of this organization, Finer Womanhood, Sisterly Love and Scholarship. Her efforts and success in various areas live on as goal for chapter members to strive towards.

To be considered, applicant must:

  • Be enrolled full-time in a college or university within the State of Illinois;

  • Have a letter from the current Basileus or Tamias verifying your financial status;

  • Submit three (3) letters of recommendation; one from an active Zeta, your grad advisor, University counselor, Dean and/or professor, a church official or employer.

  • Have been an active member in current chapter for at least 1 year prior to submitting application;

  • Have a cumulative g.p.a. of 2.00;

  • Submit a copy of your college transcripts reflecting your cumulative grade point average

  • Other requirements for receiving this award will be based on scholastic achievement, need and service to Zeta.
